Today is my Grandma Margaret's 86th birthday. I have the special privilege of sharing my birthday with my grandma (so yes, it is my birthday too) and I've always felt it gave us a special connection. Now that I live 1,497 miles away (give or take), I can't be there to celebrate with her, but I'm so grateful to have such an incredible lady as my grandma.
Growing up I was lucky enough to live close by to all 4 of my grandparents and I love them all so dearly. (I could go on forever about how awesome my grandparents are.) My grandparents on my Mom's side lived next door, and so I used to be able to walk over to visit Grandma Margaret whenever I wanted, which was often. When I was little we'd make mud pies and pick fairy-sized flower bouquets and talk about kitties until it was time for me to go home. We played endless games of rummy and Mary Widow wist and my grandma did her best to teach me to knit - a skill I somehow never mastered. She taught me how to make Lefse and always fostered a kindness for all living things
In all the time I spent with my grandma, I can't remember a single time where she was angry and I never heard her say anything negative about anybody. As a kid I just thought she didn't get angry, or notice people's bad qualities. As an adult I realize that wasn't the case, but rather she had mastered the ability to be gracious, kind, and patient all most all the time. She also chose to see the best in people. I feel these are such incredibly important qualities, and I'm so glad to have such a wonderful lady in my life..
Happy Birthday Grandma! I'm celebrating out here for you.
